How does Lago meter LLM token usage?
Lago's Agent SDK wraps an existing LLM client so application code doesn't change, extracts usage from each response into a normalized set of fields, and ships those events to Lago in batches without blocking the LLM call. It supports OpenAI, Anthropic, AWS Bedrock, Google Gemini, Mistral, and gateway providers like Cloudflare AI Gateway and Databricks AI Gateway.
Can Lago bill by token count or by dollar cost?
Both. Token mode records raw usage (input tokens, output tokens, cache reads) as billable metrics priced through Lago's own plan configuration. Price mode has the SDK fetch live per-token prices, convert usage on each call into a dollar cost, and let a team add its own margin on top, which is useful for reselling model access without maintaining a pricing table.
What is the Lago Billing Assistant?
The Billing Assistant is a conversational agent that manages invoices, customers, subscriptions, coupons, and payments through natural language requests instead of manual UI clicks, and asks for explicit confirmation before any sensitive action executes. It's available on request to organizations with AI chat permission enabled and a premium add-on subscription.
What does the Dunning Agent do differently from standard automation?
The Dunning Agent reads a customer's payment history and reliability before deciding how to pursue an overdue invoice, rather than applying the same reminder schedule to every account. It can send reminders and retry charges below a set cap, and hands anything beyond that, like refunds or subscription changes, to a person. It's available on request.
What is the Lago MCP Server?
The Lago MCP Server gives AI assistants like Claude direct, governed access to billing data (invoices, customers, payment status) through natural language, so a query like "pending invoices from last month" returns a real answer instead of requiring a custom report. It authenticates with a Lago API key and is open source, so a team can self-host or extend it.
